No more guns in the street . . . “Say Something” | Music Video
We have had a long relationship with composer Regina Harris-Baiocchi over the years, recording live performances of her music and producing videos for her various compositions.
In this animated video production “Say Something” featuring Felicia Patton, dealing with gun violence, my vision was to downplay the obvious images of death and destruction or young people having shootouts in the street.
I opted for a more “old school” animation that harkened back to a simpler time and had a more introspective nostalgic feel. To accomplish this I partnered with Dave Powell who created the walking woman silhouette which we put in front of a simple urban landscape suggesting a kind of film noir quality. I did not want bright colors as the subject matter is dark and the solution to violence is murky. There is also an undercurrent of danger evident in the song. Even so the yellow windows offer some sense of hope and brightness in people’s lives even as it suggests a move toward isolation. The effect reminds me of the kind of simple animations we might have seen on a TV variety show back in the 1960s or so.
